HLANGANANI - WE MAMA WAMI

Scathamiya group Hlanganani, have released their latest album titled We Mama Wami. The Kings of Maskandi Shwi no Mtekhala also form part of this group. This latest album contains 10 new tracks all composed by Hlanganani. It contains tracks such as the title track We Mama Wami, Qo qo qo and We Bafana Bakithi.

The title track We Mama Wami is all about the importance of children growing up with an identity. In today’s society, many children are denied their right to know who their fathers are and only when it is too late do they get the answers they have been looking for. This song is also a plea to all mothers to tell their children the truth. It also acknowledges the important role women play as mothers and caregivers in our society.

Qo qo qo is a touching song about children who are living a “pipe life”. These are children who have been abandoned by their parents and are left with no one, street children living under bridges, pipes, anywhere where they can find shelter. But the song is encouraging because it says that the children eventually realise there is more to life than their present circumstances. To improve their quality of life, they go knocking from door to door, “Qo! Qo! Qo!” seeking shelter and hoping for any Good Samaritan who would help them escape the misery of life on the streets. The song also appeals to good people out there to open their hearts and arms to assist these children.

Over the years the group has faced many challenges and yet they are still standing strong. In the track titled We Bafana Bakithi, the group looks back on all the hardships they have faced such as losing several group members along the way. The song is in memory of their “Lost Brothers” and is also a word of encouragement from their manager that they should keep going and not lose hope.

A bonus on the album is the inclusion of two gospel tracks Ukholo Lwakho and Vuma Mina.

Having been around since the early 90’s, Hlanganani is one of those traditional acts that is still flying high with Scathamiya, carrying the hopes and aspirations of the future of this musical genre. This new album, We Mama Wami, is their contribution in achieving their desire to see this genre being preserved for future generations and to get people to appreciate this traditional and homegrown sound.
