Dumi Mkokstad, one of the youngest gospel talents in the country, is already in the process of compiling an impressive musical history.

His musical career started at the age of nine, singing with his father, two brothers and sisters at the openings of stores and at funerals in his hometown of Mount Ailif in Kokstad. It was at one of these funerals that Dumi was discovered by a local producer.

Hamba Mphefumulo

Dumi is affectionately nicknamed “Mkokstad” as he was born in Kokstad in the Eastern Cape. Dumi released his first album with Bula Music in early 2003 which was then named “Dumi Mkokstad”. The album has currently reached gold status.

Following the release of “Dumi Mkokstad” came “Ngivumele”, produced by Bigboy Mlangeni and Sipho Mbele.
Long time producer of the renowned Rebbecca Malope, Sizwe Zako, had taken great note of Dumi's talent and decided to get involved on the production of his third album. The result was the brilliant “Hamba Mphefumulo”.

For the latest album, Dumi was taken under the wing of well-known musician, songwriter and producer, the legendary Babsy Mlangeni. Babsy contributed to the songwriting in the form of songs such as “Bayashumayela” and “Angikamboni”. The new album is hence titled “Angikamboni” as Dumi sings of how he's never seen anyone like Jesus.

Despite the acknowledgment of the boy's undeniable talent, Dumi is working hard at obtaining a firm education at a secondary school in Pietermaritzburg. He is tackling subjects such as Mathematics and Accounting.

This teenage celebrity is strangely grateful for the pressure of growing up in front of the press and media. Dumi believes it has given him even more reason to stay on the right path and be responsible. “I’m happy with how I am”, says Dumi who believes the support of fans and those who love him have greatly influenced his life.

And it seems Dumi’s priorities are well in check and he is focused on his education. Although he would like his future to be in the gospel music scene, he believes he may also have a future as an accountant. Dumi also finds time to enjoy hobbies such as soccer and cricket. Playing piano is just another of Dumi’s talents and regularly plays keyboard on his albums.
There has previously been some question as to Dumi’s ability to deliver a Christian message at such a young age. Dumi however believes that his music has the ability to save lives and that people shouldn't look down on him because of his age. The polite and well mannered young man displays everything a good role model should.
