Harvey’s career in the music industry began in 1980 with the formation in Johannesburg of the multiracial band “The Dynamics”.
The band signed to Priority Records in 1981 and released two albums before relocating to the UK in 1984.
Following the demise of the band Harvey returned to South Africa in 1986 and joined EMI Music SA in 1987. Promoted to Trade Marketing Manager for independent distributed companies in 1989, Harvey was then given the task of running the biggest local music division in the country, namely CCP Records, which he did from 1993 to 1998.
Appointed as Managing Director of CCP in 1994, Harvey was also appointed to the full board of EMI SA and to the board of the recording industry governing body ASAMI.
During his tenure at CCP, Harvey worked with a host of South African artists including Brenda Fassie, Rebecca, Thomas Chauke, Ringo, Arthur and Tshepo Tshola.
He was also worked very closely with The Princes Trust on two major concerts, the first held in London at The Royal Albert Hall in 1996 to mark the State Visit of President Mandela to the United Kingdom and the return concert at Ellis Park stadium in Johannesburg during November 1997, which was attended by HRH The Prince Of Wales.
In 1998, Harvey left EMI and founded, along with Peter Tladi & Clive Hardwick, Bula Music (Pty) Ltd and Ad Lib Music Publishing (Pty) Ltd, two companies dedicated to the development of South African local artists and music.
Within the first two years, Bula Music became recognised as one of the countries leading independent labels, and as well as developing multi platinum new talent began to attract major established artists from other labels.
Today Bula’s position in the marketplace is that of the leading Gospel label in South Africa. In addition to the Gospel artists, Bula also records and markets several of the countries foremost Maskandi (Zulu Traditional) recording stars.
In 1999, Bula also established an association with Ghetto Ruff, the country's leading Hip Hop/Kwaito label, responsible for artists such as Zola & Mapaputsi.
Harvey is currently a director of several companies, and also sits on the board of RISA, the Recording Industry of South Africa (formerly known as ASAMI).
